Top 5 Pharmacy Franchises in the Philippines

November 2, 2017 by Borgy Leave a Comment

“Bawal magkasakit,” is a popular slogan that came from a well-known medicine brand. Filipinos often use the term whenever they are reminding a loved one, who is not feeling well, to take medicine.

As we all know, Filipinos are the kind of people who are very compassionate especially when it concerns someone whom they care about the most. Whenever a friend or a family member gets sick, the first thing we would always do is to take good care of them by lowering their body temperature or by feeding them a hot soup. However, there are some circumstances when we aren’t available at the moment to take care of our loved ones; therefore what we do is to get some medicines to make them feel better, isn’t it?

Medicine has been an important part of our lives as it is the only thing that can cure the pain our loved ones are feeling. Since there are a lot of Filipinos who rely on medicines, many entrepreneurs decided to make medicines more accessible to everyone by building their own pharmacies in different places.

The return of investment in a pharmacy was wonderful that more Filipinos were encouraged to do the same. And to give you a suggestion on which store to get a franchise from, here are the list of the Top 5 Pharmacy Franchises in the Philippines.

Value Aid Generic Pharmacy

Value Aid Generic Pharmacy is a dedicated and passionate pharmacy that has been striving to provide the best quality of medicines to the Filipino people. Aside from the quality, Value Aid Generic Pharmacy also aims to offer the lowest prices possible, especially for the poor who can’t afford to purchase from an expensive brand.

The company started in 2003, owned and operated by pharmacists themselves who wanted to cater to the needs of the sick and the poor. The goal of the owners became a stepping stone for the company to be a recognized and later on had been successful and began offering franchise.

The franchise fee costs P150,000, while the total investment cost is P550,000. The amount will guarantee a 5 year validity contract. The minimum required space for the pharmacy store is 15 square meters and you would have to pay a royalty fee that is 2% of your gross sales.

A good advantage for franchising Value Aid is the fact that many Filipinos have been loyal to the company. On the contrary, the only downfall lies on the renewable of the franchising contract. According to reports, the fee for the renewal of contract is P3,000 per month after the expiration date.

Citi Drug 2 and 1

Citi Drug is a pharmacy that promotes the importance of well-established medicines. To be specific, the brand supports branded medicines compared to the generic drugs as there are a lot of medicines that doesn’t have a generic equivalent.

Citi Drug was born in Ligao City, Albay back in 2008. Due to the Bicolanos’ support to the company, Citi Drug was able to invade the other parts of the country.

To be able to get a franchise, an interested candidate would need about P200, 000 for the franchise fee. But the total investment can cost as much as P1.2M which may seem like a high price. No need to worry as the amount can cover a lot of inclusions such as:

  • Use of Trade Name and
  • Proprietary Marks
  • Location Approval
  • Training for Franchisee
  • Pharmacist and Staff
  • Procurement Program
  • Marketing Assistance
  • Opening Assistance
  • Operations Manual
  • Research and Development

The disadvantage of Citidrug is similar to that of Value Aid. The only difference is at the renewal of contract is for P200 per day basis.

The Generics Pharmacy

Unlike the first two pharmacies, The Generics Pharmacy is a more popular one. The Filipino people know this pharmacy as the home of affordable medicines with the same effect like the branded ones.

TGP started back in 1949, which was originally founded by Pacific Insular Co., and was bought by the Liuson couple ten years later. The management strived to provide generic medicine wholesale at lower margins, and later on opened its windows into retail selling. At first, it was only available on one store, but after seeing that more customers liked the concept, the company began offering retail services on different areas.

A candidate should be able to pay a franchise fee of P290,000 and a total franchise cost of P750,000. Compared to other pharmacies, TGP is definitely a cheaper option. Moreover, there is a payment of 1% for the advertisements, which is done on a national level.

A good advantage for having a franchise is the fact that TGP doesn’t take royalty fees, nor do they offer franchising for a huge amount of money.

Generika Drugstore

Generika Drugstore is on the same level as TGP. Both are major players in the league, which are known to be competitive in terms of affordability and quality.

The company was a product of the owners’ determination and decision-making skills. Generika began to serve Filipinos as a small pharmacy in Paranaque City in 2008. The company failed to be successful in a short period of time since the owners didn’t have any backgrounds in medicine. However, the owners learned to turn the tables around through their patience and perseverance. Their efforts finally paid off, and later on became ready to sail their ship. As a matter of fact, they were able to catch up to other giants despite being an amateur. Presently, Generika has over 350 branches nationwide.

Generika offers different kinds of franchises such as:

  • Standard Package – P150,000
  • Satellite Package – P50,000
  • Small Town Package – P50,000
  • Twin Store Package – P50,000
  • Drugstore Conversion – P100,000
  • Mini-Town Package – P30,000

The amounts stated above are only the franchising fees and doesn’t include the total cost of investment. The total amount that a candidate might spend is ranging from P300,000 to P1.5M, having an estimated payback period within a year and half to two and a half.

  • 15 square meters for generics only
  • 20 square meters for generics and branded medicines
